Kid in the Hall 'Shifts' to Sexy Silver Screen Daddy

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 20, 2007--Scott Thompson, one of the first openly gay comedians on television and internationally beloved for his hilarious characters on 'Kids in the Hall', has been signed to play a dramatic lead role in the upcoming feature film 'Shifting the Canvas'.

'Shifting the Canvas', a Roaring Leo/Deeper Magic Production, will be directed by award-winning director Chuck Griffith ('Thank You, Good Night') and produced by Robert Zimmer, Jr. ('Half-Life').

While Thompson, 48, may be best known for the frisky character Buddy Cole on 'Kids in the Hall', the role in 'Shifting' is quite a departure. He will be playing the role of Marcus, a down-and-out café owner in Brooklyn battling the urban virus of gentrification around his shop. Marcus is described by the filmmakers as a charming sugar-daddy type with a younger lover, and "patriarch" to a wayward group of younger gay and lesbian artists in Brooklyn, New York.

Said Griffith, 31, "Scott and I instantly had an epiphany while brainstorming one day; Marcus is like a post-modern Allen Ginsberg." Ginsberg, a leader in the Beat Generation movement, was known for being a charismatic, cultural, and personal figure who was infatuated with younger men. "I am looking forward to seeing Scott take on this dramatic challenge. He has had a wonderful career making people laugh -- gay and straight, but after several discussions we're passionate about this project and it will be amazing to see him make audiences cry," added Griffith. "I think audiences will be delighted to see him in a different sort of role."

Before there was 'Ellen' or 'Chuck and Larry', Thompson was a maverick on television. No one was open and proudly out-of-the-closet on TV like Thompson while he was filming 'Kids' during the early 1990s. Now, the filmmakers think Thompson's vanguard assignment with 'Shifting' will provoke discussion about the next movement in gay-themed films.

Robert Zimmer, Griffith's collaborator, said, "This film is about artists first, human beings struggling to make sense of life and love. Even though the main characters are gay, this is a story of a surrogate extended family, set amidst the backdrop of New York culture's steep decline while condos and chain stores get erected all around these characters. None of the characters are addicted to drugs, have HIV, or are still closeted. That's all been done. This is a story about people aching to live fully."

Thompson will be playing alongside J.P. Pitoc ('Trick', 'Six Feet Under'), who will portray the lead character Leo, a struggling Brooklyn artist that gets caught up in a Faustian deal with a real estate tycoon. Thompson's character is a best friend and mentor to Leo, but outside forces bring that friendship into a perilous territory.

'Shifting the Canvas' is slated for production in Brooklyn this Fall to make the deadlines for film festival submissions. Los Angeles' Outfest and New York's Tribeca Film Festival, two of the festivals that the filmmakers are shooting for next year, have their submission deadlines in mid-December of this year. The filmmakers are in talks with potential distributors; however, nothing is concrete to date. Lou Peterson, who just sold his first feature and gay-themed thriller, 'In The Blood', to Viacom's Logo Television Network and TLA Releasing, will serve as one of the film's executive producer.
