College Tips- Managing your Money

Generally speaking, whenever we think about college we immediately think freedom and fun. However, frequently stressing over finances is definitely not "fun" and being chained to an ever-growing heap of debt is not my idea of "freedom". Money management is a necessary part of a stress-free college life. You need to begin sometime in your life and it might as well be today.

What students ought to know about money management:

Money management is generally done through creating a budget. Budgets help you form a realistic plan for spending (and saving!) your money. Due to the fact that your income and expenses are always changing, whichever budget you decide to use must be flexible.

The first step you'll want to take is writing down your sources of income. This can include income from a job, grants, scholarships, allowance from home, etc. The second step you should take is writing down all your expenses. Split them into two catagories: fixed and flexible.

Fixed expenses are exact amounts due on a specific date that don't change. Flexible expenses are amounts of money that fluctuate depending on your needs and wants.

Example Fixed Expenses:

- Housing

- Car payment (including insurance)

- Health insurance

- College Tuition

- Cell phone

Example Flexible Expenses:

- Books

- Gasoline and maintenance for your car

- Going over on your cell phone minutes

- Social expenses (movies, dates, football games, etc)

- Personal expenses (clothes, food, health costs, haircuts, etc.)

Add up the amount of income and expenses you have (you may have to guess on many of the expenses). Look at your paper. Do you have more expenses than your income can cover? If this is the case, you should think about what you can do to increase your income or reduce your expenses. This may seem elementary, but it's necessary if you wish to stay out of the hole while you are attending school.

It is going to take some sacrifice to reduce your expenses. A great deal of college students are used to spending their money impulsively. This sort of bad money management will lead to financial bondage. Here are some helpful tips that will assist you in reducing your expenses:

- Pay all your bills on time

- Watch out for peer pressure

- Purchase used text books

- Avoid impulse buying

- Look for sales

- Don't eat out and stop buying junk food

- Go to matinees instead of evening shows

Everybody is going to need a different type of budget to fit his or her individual needs. However, you can find basic budgets online, in financial books or you can simply ask your parents or friends to help you create one. Do not allow debt to chain you down. Find a budget, use it, and be willing to sacrifice to stay out of debt.
