Programmers: How To Make Money, Get Hired Online
Why would anyone work a 9-5 job as a programmer when they can make more and pick their own hours working online? A decent programmer can easily find employment using hire-me type sites full time, part time, or whatever they want. You can pick the jobs you want to work, and pick the amount you want to be paid. How is this possible you may ask. More importantly, where can I sign-up. Well, it is possible because there are now many websites offering to connect buyers of software to programmers willing to do freelance work from home. Some of these buyers only want to have their websites fixed, php code updated, add features to software, or write simple programs. Some are bigger jobs like creating complex websites or database programs. Generally, these sites are very easy to use. The buyer posts a job request with their requirements. Then programmers look over their request and post a bid response with their price. The buyer then selects a qualified coder who is in the right price range. Projects can vary from $25 up to $25,000.00. The coder is also protected because the money is placed in escrow by the website. When you complete the job, you are paid by the website. You do not have to worry about the buyer coming up with the money. As a programmer, you do not begin work until the money is already paid. It is a true win-win for buyers and coders. I myself am a buyer. I have hired hundreds of coders, web designers, voice over artists, graphic designers, ghostwriters, and others. I can quickly go through a list of bids and know without even reading the response who is a professional coder, who is an amateur, which one I am not going to accept and which one I might consider reading. If you are a coder who wants to work freelance jobs like this, you had better know what buyers are looking for. You must know what will cause a buyer to hire you or ignore your bid. Many new programmers join these hire-me type sites, post bids for a few projects, then quit because they are never hired. The problem is that they do not understand what buyers are looking for. If they cannot provide the information in their bid response that will make a high paying buyer jump up and pay attention, they will never be hired by anyone. This does not have to happen. Experienced programmers are often driven away from hire-me sites simply because they do not understand the etiquette of these sites. I think it is terrible to drive away qualified programmers. Many buyers are desperately trying to find RealBasic programmers and good PHP programmers. There are so few qualified programmers offering their services and so many buyers who need their service. There are never enough on the hire-me sites for all the buyers who need workers. A programmer may also take a job, then receive a bad rating on their first job not because they did a bad job, but because they did not understand the how the game is played. They did not know how to deal with a buyer and the result was a bad rating which makes it difficult for them to be hired again. This also can be easily avoided by simply knowing what buyers are looking for and what they expect from programmers. As a buyer who has hired hundreds of people, I can tell you these secrets. If you want to be successful as a programmer on any hire-me site you must stay in contact with the buyer. If two days go by and the buyer has not heard from you, they will assume you are not working and may try to cancel the project. You must stay in contact with buyers and let them know how much progress you are making. Next, as a programmer, you must expect that the requirements will change. Many programmers will bid low on a project because they think it will be an easy, quick job. Then they realize it takes more work than expected. This can be avoided by carefully reading the specifications first. Some coders will bid on jobs without reading the details. This always causes problems. Now the coder does not want to continue because they feel like they are working for peanuts, and the buyer feels they are being squeezed if the coder asks for more money. Make sure you read the job requirements before bidding and build in enough extra to cover the unexpected time every job is going to take. Always submit beta versions for your buyer to test during development. One of the biggest reasons for bad feedback on these sites occurs when a coder waits until the last minute before the job expires, then submits their code. The buyer now has no time to test or make suggestions before the project expires. The resulting code may be nothing like the buyer wanted, but he never saw any earlier versions and was unable to make corrections when it would have been easy. You must provide beta versions and listen to feedback from the buyer during development. Coders are also buyers on these hire-me sites. A coder may be very good at C++ programming but not knowledgeable in creating skins. One of the worst things a coder can do is avoid a job because they think they don't have all the skills. You can bet that most other coders will think the same way because they will not consider hiring someone to help them with the project. A smart coder knows how to act as a general contractor. When this coder is hired to design a nice looking piece of software, they must also become a buyer themselves and hire someone to create the skin. That is the beauty of these hire-me type sites. You can hire someone to help you out and you can hire an expert too which makes your work look even better. There are many other elements you must know to increase your chances of receiving bids on a project. There are also secrets to obtaining additional work. Unfortunately many coders think they must work for pennies to compete on these sites with low cost programmers from India. The truth is that they simply do not know what to say in their bid requests to obtain the high paying jobs. Make sure that you provide buyers with the information they need, review their job requirements, keep them updated with beta code and status reports. You will find that after a few good jobs where the buyer is happy, those same buyers will come back to you over and over asking you to do more work.
