Ogonna Nnamani Savors Playing In Olympic Gold Medal Volleyball Match

Fargo, ND (PRWEB) August 25, 2008 -- Ogonna Nnamani's 2008 Olympic experience culminated today with the U.S. Women's Volleyball team winning the Silver Medal in their match against top-ranked Brazil. After not playing in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches against Italy and Cuba, Nnamani came off the bench today to score three points in the third game of the championship match. Team USA lost that game by a score of 25-13, and lost the match three games to one.

Despite seeing limited action throughout the Olympic volleyball tournament, Nnamani has enjoyed every bit of her Olympic experience. "It has been wonderful to be a part of this team," said Nnamani before the Gold Medal match. "We are so excited to have the chance to go for the Gold! It is a once in a lifetime experience, and words cannot express how happy and excited I am for this moment. Hours and hours in the gym, in the weight room and away from your family and close ones are all worth it when you have a chance to go for Gold!"

Nnamani is a prodigious hitter, as she showed in Team USA's final preliminary round match against Poland a week ago, scoring 11 kills and a total of 17 points, accounting for more than half of the 30 points scored by the U.S. team's bench players. Her hitting prowess dates all the way back to her high school playing days in Bloomington, Illinois where she first experienced Athletic Republic's Acceleration Training.

"She was the perfect candidate for our training program," said Gary Henry, Director of the Sports Enhancement Center in Bloomington. With the ability to jump 10 feet, seven inches, and dunk a volleyball, Henry focused on helping Nnamani develop quickness, backward mobility and hitting strength.

"Before I started doing Acceleration Training, I had never done any conditioning and weight-lifting," said Nnamani. "I really enjoyed the training and could tell I was benefiting from the program."

Throughout her college career at Stanford, Nnamani continued to train with Henry each summer. " Ogonna was very aware that she needed to continue to work on her conditioning and we spent a lot of time in the summers working on her explosiveness," said Henry.

While Nnamani's role on the U.S. team isn't as high profile as it was with her high school and college teams, Nnamani has always had a team-oriented perspective on the game. "Volleyball is really a team game and not one person is responsible for a team's success. As an athlete you need to continue to get better and condition your body to compete at the highest levels. Throughout my career, Acceleration Training has helped me do that."
